11-17-10 Public Service Announcement

and no, I'm not freaked out "gonna shoot at every moving blade of grass tonight", but I'm getting there...

Public Service Announcement, because I'm pretty sure the fellow who made the accusation today followed a link to my blog ...

No, dude. You and your family be happy, and content. I advertise myself here as "Taken White Female", and Facebook says "in a relationship". If you really thought, for one minute, that I was flirting, or advertising, you're desperate for love.

Not a snowball's chance in hell I want ANY of that, ever. Just because we agreed on a political debate, stood on the same side of the aisle, means in no way I'm looking for an alternative to what I've got. I have other conservative friends who in no way assumed I was flirting by describing myself, by blog, by Facebook, or otherwise.

Alright, now, maybe I am creeped out.. So I leave the readership with this...

My pistol is still loaded. Gun Control Means using Both Hands.

Now if ya'll will excuse me, I'm going to get back to riding horses now.

This now concludes this public service announcement. We now return you to your regularly scheduled equine adventures, already in progress.

08/03/10 Weather, and PSA

Ridiculous
Hot
All
The
Time

It's been in the high 90s daily, with heat indeces above 100F, mostly closer to 110F, now for a few weeks. This week has seemed especially ridiculous, mostly because the winds have calmed to near-nothing at home.

This all leads to very little riding. I haven't done more than hose off sweat for the last two nights, and I'm hoping tonight I can at least get a little walking in on one or the other. The only times of day it's "reasonable" to ride is early mornings. This motivates me more to get my arena lights installed, as it gets a little better in the late evenings.

So I've done lots of reading, and living rides through the adventures of lots of other bloggers. I stumbled on a blog I used to read a lot, but having come to see what the blog author is really all about, I won't even do her the service of a link-back. What I will say, is this . . .

When you've fallen on hard times, and the job is lost, and you've found yourself with a horse you can't easily pay for, selling isn't always the answer. It's a sad story of horse got "accidentally pregnant", add in an injury, and suddenly, horse-owner is begging for donations to pay for critter care, and the foal in utero growing up. It sounds good from the sidelines to shout, "You moron! Sell the horse!" I can understand the comments that bark this, not realizing the current economic situation. With so many folks out of work, and a handful more barely getting by, we're not all out searching for problems to buy. If I can find an OTTB or a little hungry horse for cheap, why on earth would I go running out and buy an injured, pregnant mare? Sure, morally, it'd be the "right thing to do". But should Romeo find a new home, I'm not out looking for a near-dead rescue case. I just don't have it in me to feed, and vet, and feed, and vet, and maybe, if I'm lucky, mount under saddle four or five years from now. I'll admit it - I'm all for the moment when it comes to horses. I need my "saddle fix". Without the ability to, at a minimum, do a little in-hand work, and some round pen time, I'd look for something else for sale.

All that on my soapbox to say, freedom of speech says to me, "If somebody wants to ask for donations to pay their vet bills, they're free to do so." As for me? I'm free to not donate, and keep from hurling insults & crude remarks their way.

If you've read for any length of time here at HDTH, in the context of this entry, it's probably quite clear which blog I'm referring to. Don't go running over & comment to the hysteria. Comments here are gladly accepted, but I won't in any way encourage my readers to go on the attack. :) Show them how to be mature & responsible.

08/01/10 Gun Range Scare

My PSA for gun safety. Do I know everything? Heck no! I don't know much, at all. I know how to be careful myself, and general loading/unloading, along with all the typical cleaning procedures. I can tear down a Browning HiPower or a Kimber with ease (mostly, shh GunDiva,, shhh), clean, and assemble without help.

Saturday afternoon, after I assaulted a few paper targets, participating fully in gun powder therapy, I got scared.

I loaded the Browning.
Looked around, saw R busy with whatever he was middling with, and nobody else around.
Pointed
Safety Off
Bang
Bang
"Whoa! Wait a minute, hold on! Hooold On!"
I dropped the gun, barrel towards the targets, took a step back, raised both hands, and looked to my right.

Somebody about 60ft off
At the rifle range
Started walking down range to get his target
Without calling "all-clear"
Scared the living snot out of me!

I asked R, "What'd I do wrong?"
"Nothing babe. But you look scared. Good time to practice, since you'll be nervous if you ever really need it. Empty the magazine quick, while you're still shook up."

And I'm pleased to report
My aim accuracy didn't change
I was still shooting good
(a little right & low - trigger finger ... grrr .. habit I MUST fix soon)
I was still in the target
And still repeatable

Okay, idjits! I know I don't know it all! But I do know you ask EVERYONE at the range firing line for All Clear before walking down range! Idjits! Scare the crap out of me for no reason! I could've seriously hurt that guy with a stray shot. oi vey!

11/13/09 Friday Nite Concert

Airing a little frustration here, folks. So you've been warned.

http://www.mercyme.org/blog/

Check the Victoria show, and the comments I've made. I hope they post 'em. I was polite as best I could be.

R and I went to a local church Friday night to see Johnny Diaz, Tenth Avenue North, and MercyMe in concert. All three performed well, Johnny Diaz was beyond funny for the only three songs he did. Tenth Avenue North did great as well.

But as MercyMe entered the sanctuary of Faith Family, and started their speech for Compassion International, asking for donations and child sponsorship, their apparel caught my eye, and it bugged the snot out of me the entire rest of the evening.

The lead singer and one of the guitar players I guess just couldn't help themselves. They both wore hats, and left them on, even when they were leading prayer. How could this be?! Didn't their parents raise them to have more respect?! That building might not be anywhere special to them, and it's not my home church, either. But it is God's house, and it seemed incredibly disrespectful that they had their hats on. I saw many in the crowd the same way, but gave that up to inexperienced folks that "didn't know any better."

But the band?! Seriously!? They weren't raised better than that? So I went to the blog for the event, and voiced my displeasure. I'll be sure to let ya'll know if anything comes of it. Might even have a picture or two depending how R's camera worked out, and if he'll share with me.

Must be the Wind...

As I figured, that FoxNews article (& the inappropriate photos) disappeared about as fast as they appeared. Good decision, guys! No way that junk should've made it to the website to start out with, let's not even discuss it being on the FRONT PAGE! Absolutely no respect for women.. Just because some folks choose to look at that stuff doesn't mean I want the general public getting it for free, nor do I want young kids accidentally finding it.

May 11, 2009 Fox News Headlines

Okay, I won't even give them the link in the post... I understand this whole "Miss America half nude photo scandal" is a big deal...

But seriously, folks. If you got to the website before they realize they're dorks & change the front page, do they honestly realize children probably visit that site during a school day?

Yes, the essentials are covered, but not by much. In my opinion, highly inappropriate for a Conservative News website front page.

Pet Peeves

Oooooh.. now I know I'm in a funky mood. I've been pondering this whole thought lately, debating if I ought to open it up, let all of us air our annoyances... Maybe they'll be cleansing to get out of your system.

I'll start.. Tagging FSSunnySD & Jessie ... I saw FSSunnySD ranting a bit about knot-tying, and from reading, Jessie's probably got LOTS she can air...

Customer service representatives that don't speak English clearly or slowly
(Sirius Radio has few that speak fluently, while every Verizon Wireless service call I've made in months has been 100% fluent.. I have expressed my opinion in both situations)

Political Extremes ... i.e. "Talking Head" Voices that give us all something to complain about, and don't waste one calorie telling us what bills are out for review & vote that we ought to be aware of. Also, folks that complain about government, the won't wake up & go vote. If you won't participate, shut up! Ought to throw this in also, extreme left or extreme right about Any issue... Rather than expect the extreme, let's settle on somewhere near the middle, where we'll end up anyways. Save my tax dollars, and we'll meet in the middle faster.

Starving horses. FuglyHorseofTheDay has another story today. I can't stand it when I see a field without grass, without hay, without grain buckets, and thin ponies. If you're stupid enough to buy one, you're responsible. If you starved your two-legged kids like you starve your four-legged kids, they'd be removed from the home, and you'd be punished. Four-leggeds don't cry loudly, and it takes too long for them to be noticed.

Alright, ladies, ya'll are next. Have at it ... I found this little exercise a bit relaxing. I've got more, but I'll reserve it to these for now..

At 12:45 This Morning

*grin* ... No, there wasn't any wildlife in my house, no helicopters and police scouring the neighborhood..

My stupid weather radio went off,, TWICE. Beeping like freaking mad. So I jumped out of bed, horrified. I ran to the radio, pushed the "What do you WANT?!" button, and listened in...

Listening...
Waking up...
Processing...
Listening...

Freaking Amber Alert. Missing 15-year old child, Houston area.

I woke up for WHAT?! Okay, I understand missing children are tragic, and I also understand Amber Alert notices and highway signs labeled with the details. But my Weather Radio? In the middle of the night?! Honestly!!! What child am I going to go looking for at nearly 1 am? If police officials are going to rank a missing child right up there with a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning (where I need to immediately take cover and hide for my own safety), I need to disconnect it or re-program my darn radio.

I unplugged it before I went to bed, angry. My heart rate was going twice the normal, and I laid awake a while before drifting back off to sleep.

EDIT... So I add onto this post in the afternoon.
http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/headline/metro/6279987.html

They found her, with no explanation of what happened. Amber Alert cancelled 11:30 am.

They woke me for WHAT?

Those People that Wear Helmets

HAH! I've got a humor cartoon on my office door - Cowboy after OSHA.

A gentleman walked by my office door earlier today - a guy I'd never before seen or spoken to. He stopped to look at the cartoon, then made the remark, "Ain't that the truth? Not far from it either. Now-a-days people all over think they have to wear helmets & body vests to ride a horse."

I responded, "Yeah, but you're talking like that to someone that rides in an English saddle, and it's not exactly like the cowboys. I don't have much to hold on to in a wreck. Besides that, it's a show rule they be worn."

He gave me almost an annoyed look, as if I was retarded for supporting helmet use. So I went on. "I took a nosedive just this weekend. If I didn't have that helmet on, considering how I fell, I probably would've had at least a concussion."

He walked away, still with a look of disgust.

Those crazy people and their helmets.. Yup! That's me! I'd rather wear one and protect my mental assets (& college edu-ma-cation) than go splat without one and burn brain cells irrepairably.

People. Are. Stupid.

Gripe Session - The "Youth of America"

Quite frequently, I read about, or hear about, "this generation".... or "my generation". We're called selfish, irresponsible, weak-minds that don't know what "real work is".

I'm sick of it. I am going to start replying, "Fine! Hate me! But keep in mind, my check's getting garnished for your Social Security. So shut up, or I'll quit working, too." =)

If you're in the older population, I'm sorry you grew up without the internet. If you're reading this, you have it now. I'm sorry you grew up without hundreds of TV channels. If you watch old MASH re-runs, you have those channels. I'm sorry you had a manual labor job as a kid. I painted fire hydrants, I know what work is. I went on a mission trip, contracted mono on the trip, and was sick half of the ten week adventure. I had three part time jobs my senior year in college with a full course load.

What I won't apologize for, is my work ethic. Just because I don't jump in head-first to a problem doesn't mean I'm lazy or stupid. It just means I am smart enough to know that it's better to think about a solution before possibly breaking the situation more. I'll lug horse grain, stack hay, clean house, cook a good supper, and mow my grass like a normal citizen. I keep gas in my truck, and the inspection current. I pay my bills on time, and over-pay when I can in an effort to get ahead.

Keep griping about me and "my generation". The more you put us down, the less motivated some will become. Those unmotivated folks won't pitch into SS nearly as much as you want them to.

Charity - Whose Responsibility Is It?

I'm going to preface this... If you don't wanna argue politics, skip the details. If you do, keep your response comments clean enough small children can read it & not ask questions. Cheers!

Who do you give to? How much? How often? I'm a regular giver, but at church mostly. If there's a toy drive, or a food drive, or a physical "giving" campaign, I try to participate. When Hurricane Ike blew in, I organized a gift card drive at work, and participated.

All that being said, I get bent out of shape sideways when I see begging. Begging on street corners, begging in restaurants, begging in grocery store parking lots. Begging on the internet, too. I reguarly see folks that, while not Bill Gates or Oprah, aren't suffering; however, because they don't have the nicest house on the block, or the means to have high speed internet, satellite cable with premium movies, or the latest Blackberry cell phone, beg. It burns my bum! I hate seeing people begging! I hate it more when they beg on the internet - behind this wireless curtain where, I can't see if they physically need what they say they need. "I'm starving and might be stuck living on the street, so please feel bad for me." I can't do it! How do I know you're bad off? How do I know for sure you're not sitting on vacation in a nicer house than my double-wide, lapping up cable-speed internet, surfing the web all day roving for sympathy?

It's not the government's responsibility to provide charity-care for those able to work. It might not be a fun job, it might not be a high-paying job... But if you can physically think for yourself, there's work to be had. I'll admit, it ain't gonna pay for high speed cable & internet... but it will keep beans & rice on the table and the heat on low. If you need help, seriously need assistance, get your rump to a church, and get involved. If you've got the calories to beg on the internet, there's certainly some calories there that can be burned entering data in the church computer, or visiting the shut-ins in a nursing home.

This concludes my rant of the season... I usually get one neat God-driven opportunity to help someone every Christmas. It's a tradition I picked up from my mom, and I've done it every year since I've had a full-time job. See the next post.. If I've offended, or caused you pain, I am sorry. I am entitled to my opinion.

You know what they say about opinions? They're like armpits - Everybody's got at least two, and usually, one stinks. Cheers all.

Something. Ate. My. Rose. Blooms.

And I'm not happy about it. I spent all summer nursing this beautiful hybrid rose. It's called "Strike It Rich", or something like that. "Strike it Gold" maybe? Can't remember. The tag's still on it. It was hot & dry all summer, and I watered, fertilized, nursed, talked to it, the works.

It finally had four moderate blossom buds on it. They were going to be nice stemmed blooms, too. Ones I could trim as they were opening, stick them in a vase, and put on my desk, to start "Jennifer has flowers on her desk" chatter.

And something ate them.
Ate them!
Some little vermit took the initiative to crawl under my house, wander up to my rose blooms, and knaw off the blossoms.

Something.
Will. Have. to.
Die!

Little Vermin! Anybuddy know how to prevent reoccurence, short of closing all the ins & outs under the house? I've still got that stray Momma cat coming in the back yard every few days, and it's a safe place to let her eat, so I don't really want to close in all the spaces. Might have to, and hope she learns how to jump over the fence to get in for food.

Survey Savvy Stinks / Friday Fill Ins

Survey Savvy stinks! Three times now I've received emails asking me to participate in a survey. Three times I've not gotten past questions 3 or 4. They ask gender, age, some strange "do you have family that works in industry ___" question, then a response that "I don't meet the criteria, thanks anyways." What that says to me, is they're looking for a low-income, trashy, middle-aged or older, male. One other survey made me think they were looking for a left-leaning Liberal, and I sure don't fit that bill. So they want to randomnly survey a select pre-sorted group. Hm.... No wonder I don't believe the polls on TV about the upcoming Election.

Moving Along to things that make me smile...
1. One of the best concerts/plays/movies I ever saw that I really didn't think I'd like was a small town theatre play in college - don't remember the name.
2. The Mini-Plate at Alejandra's in Port Lavaca is a recipe I recently made (or meal I recently ordered) that was delicious! Cheese enchilada, soft beef taco, rice & beans, Iced Tea. Cheap, quick, not a greasy oily yukie pile of sick-later food.
3. It's time for trail riding in the Cooler Autumn Texas weather.
4. Schwan's Sugar Free Chocolate Sundae Ice Cream is quite refreshing.
5. If I never hear the word Clinton again, it'll be too soon.
6. To one side of the curving road was a dead hog, and on the other was the rest of it (gross surprise on the roadway to work this morning.. YUCK).
7. And as for the weekend, tonight I'm looking forward to Chewie in the round pen & watering the flower beds, tomorrow my plans include Fair Parade & saddle shopping and Sunday, I want to enjoy my trail ride & obedience class!

Whatta Weekend ... Horse Updates x3

Friday - both boys worked. Romeo in his cowboy-borrowed bit. He did great. First time he tried a zippy trot, I applied a little bitta bit pressure, and slam! on the brakes. That'll get his attention. Good stuff! We walked around the neighborhood a bit, then went to the neighbor's yard. He was un-boarding his windows, and sat to take a break. He sat down on his little square deck in the yard, and Romeo & I walked over to it. Romeo seemed scare of the deck, so I asked him to walk up to it, so he could see it wasn't going to hurt him. He walked right up to it, and even tried to take a step up on it. Good boy!

Chewie Friday - w/t/c in side reins, 6, then 5. He was pretty good. Not very round & not giving all the time at the poll, but not taking off & fighting it, either. 25 minutes of that, then I worked him at a collected & long loose walk, alternating collection & direction for 10 minutes. Sound, and happy.

Saturday - Chewie, repeat. He was pretty darn good. Accepting of the collected walk, with a nice forward walk. Hooves look great, and I think the pulse on the left front is gone. If it's not gone, it sure is hard to feel. I'm going to look for it again tonight. Right pulse is still there, but the hoof seems to be handling the shoe job well - He isn't dragging it, and still has nice front movement at trot. About 12 minutes of bareback walk - I lost track of time, we were having fun. I also asked for turns on the forehand, and turns on the haunches, first time since July. He wasn't 100%, but gave a pretty good effort.

Romeo, Saturday. In the morning, we had a longer work session, about 45 minutes total, with much more trot. The trot work was great. Nice & easy, slow, bending on neck rein & leg. Towards the end, I collected him up, and put him in a come & go workout of trot shortening & lengthening. He got pretty firey from that, and it made me consider maybe that lengthened trot doesn't feel good for him. Not sure.

Romeo Saturday night. We loaded up grain, supplements, and the trailer, and headed out. Went to the rodeo arena to hang out with the ropers. (This was not the original plan - the initial plans were to take Romeo to Cowboy Les' house, unload his things, then go for a short trail ride before leaving him there. But, cowboys change their plans frequently, and anytime someone says, "Let's go rope", there's no stopping it.) Romeo helped pen the steers, and moved them from the end of the pen to the roping chute twice. The second time was a true adventure. There were some riders outside the alleyway, helping us move the steers along. There was also a younger high-school aged kid holding an electric shock prod. Turns out, that prod has more influence than Romeo does. Two steers flew past us as the kid stood on the fence between the arena and the alleyway. The steers spooked, split with about 6 behind the kid (on the wrong side of the chute). It was a mess. I know the kid is learning, but when everyone hollers, "Get down off the fence! You're confusing them! Get down!", why not listen? augh.. people are stupid. :)

Both boys had Sunday off. Romeo is at Cowboy Les' house, and Chewie got a break. I was busy all day, between church at 8am, a kick-off singles group meeting at noon, NFL football at 3, obedience trainingat 430pm. It amazes me that I didn't sleep very well last night. I should have, as busy as I was.

Today is another day. Chewie will get his regular work tonight, with probably 20 minutes on side reins, 20 minutes bareback walk. I *might* ask for a brief circle each way wp jog.. I'm just not sure.

What's Your Favorite Urban Legend?

We've all heard plenty of them, I'm sure. I have a handful of legends that irk me, annoy me, and flat out make me wanna scream, "You're Nuts if you believe that!"

Plastic in the Microwave... That has to be my favorite.
No it's not bad for you - I used to work for a food packaging company. Worst it'll do is cause minor digestive upset as your body tries to figure out how to process without digesting.

Snopes has disputed it, as have many other more scientific resources.

Whew.. got that off my chest. I feel better now.

No pony updates. Chewie got the mud & sweat hosed off, and I think he's happy about it. Bugs have settled a bit with the rain coming & going.

Come Rain or Come Shine

Just as I started to type this, sirens roared on the nearby road. Fire engines... again.. When will the idiots in town learn.. DON'T LIGHT FIRES WHEN THE GRASSES ARE DRY! We haven't had significant rain in about 3 weeks, yet they have to burn that brush pile, or the trash, or the newspapers, and off the blaze goes. Dang it. A pile of acrage burnt while I was on vacation, due to a controlled burn getting out of control (controlled burn with a water truck beside, burning brush for some clearing work to re-install train tracks by the highway). People are stupid... just plain stupid. God bless whoever's fighting that fire, and bless the idjits who lit it with a little more common sense for next time.

It's supposed to rain today. Weatherbug says 50% chance. It was storming in a nearby county, MacKenzie brought it to my attention following me around the house shadowing. I'm banking on it. I want rain really really bad. Pastures need it, yard needs it, all those crunchy oak leaves in the front yard need it. The place looks horridly dry, and I'm anxious for the precip.

Whether it rains or not, both boys will come out, get hoof cleanings, hose-down the sweaty dusty dirt they're covered in, dry in hand (mowing-munching a little bit of grass that's been watered by the septic underground), and sprayed generously with fly spray. If I can't ride, I'm at least going to let them know they're loved.

It's great to be home. I slept soundly on the couch last night until nearly 11, nobody to poke me awake & say, "Get to bed". I was woke by Kenzie jumping on & off the bed, and Allie wriggling up to my face, licking me like a popsicle. Breakfast was uber-healthy, now that I've been to the grocery store to restock. Snacks & meals are all back in the house, and I'm satisfied I can get back on my good-girl hypo diet.

Off to check the radar. All you riding-people, amuse me with some riding stories, will ya? Any gawd-boring detail you choose. Let me live vicariously through you. I can't ride the guys, weather pending, somebody ought to be doing more than scrubbing water buckets & grooming.

Whatta Trip

Some photos are owed, and I'll get around to that....

Friday, I packed, organized, cleaned, told the boys they were loved, and prepared for the journey.

Saturday, cleaned a bit more compulsively, packed more, and headed for the airport. Travel to PA was good. The first flight, IAH to PHL, was good. Long, but easy enough for dog & human. the second flight, I felt like I was in the middle of a family reunion. Each trip teaches me more about how uncivilized people can be out in public, I swear. PLEASE LEAVE YOUR SHOES ON DURING THE FLIGHT IF YOUR FEET STINK! For the Love of ManKind! NASTY! Lady sat beside me, flipping in and out of her shoes, the fumes almost as foul as a trash pile. Crying out loud.. I didn't deserve that stench! Happy to arrive in PIT in one piece, late in the evening.

Sunday, Mom & I startled Dad at the camp with a visit he didn't anticipate. Happy Birthday Daddy, your baby came home. We spent that day relaxing, sleeping, watching the camp fire. Allie-dog was a goof, startled by all the surprises, all the scents, the reminders that other types of animals lived there.

Monday, I adventured to a trail riding facility, and Pebbles the "almost 30" Appy mare took me on a nice wooded rocky walking adventure. When we pulled up to the place, first thing I looked at, were feet. No hooves, no happy horses. I watched each of the horses for disposition, paid close attention to their overall body condition (all were chunky & happy), and went to register. A mom scared the staff and her small daughter with "falling off the trail horse at other facilities" stories. I laughed out loud, because if the mom wanted to encourage her kid to ride, horror riding stories wasn't the trick. They chose a half hour ride, me, the hour. Why go all that way and only ride a half-hour? As the guide introduced each of the horses, calling out their names, I listened carefully to age & breed. As Pebbles was identified as the "older Appaloosa mare that everyone picks on in the herd", I knew I had the horse. "That one!" I hollered, and her ears perked happy as he untied her, and said to her, "Okay Pebbles, it's your turn, out alone with Comanche & me."

The guide was chatty, the trail was rocky & muddy in spots, and the horses enjoyed every minute. Pebbles tried me by seeing if I'd let her eat on the trail. I didn't, but instead thumped with both legs, and a gentle tug on the bit. She quickly figured out that wasn't going to work out, and behaved angelically. She let me direct her around some mud, and her ears said, "Lady, this is great! I have a leader! Been a while since somebody bright rode me." I felt satisfied with that, as she wandered up & down the steep hillsides, only sliding on a rock once. I love Appaloosas... I really do. If Chewie and I ever part company ...... It'll be an Appy in the barn.

Tuesday, the family scampered to a clothing store in Warren, PA. Bought some "dress up for church" clothes, gotta latte in a really neat little shop, and headed for camp. Ran off to a park attraction (Kinzua dam, pictures to follow sometime). Mom and I went to the park where I rode Pebbles, grabbed a few more photos, and then to a tourist souvenir shop, and I snatched up a coffee mug for my collection, and some moccasins that are to die for. Deerskin leather, and incredibly comfortable. ooh.. nice shoes!

Wednesday, we headed for home, had a dinner-out celebration for Dad's birthday, and cleaned up in preparation for the trip back to TX.

Thursday, all day travel.

Friday is here, and I'm glad to be home. Through some emails and texts, it seems Farrier Mike & I are back on speaking terms, socially getting along. Can't say the same for Robin, as she's still not trying to initiate conversation. I'm not going to waste calories on it. Chewie is still off for no riding, and Romeo is on light-duty until those shoenail holes grow out.

I'm resolving to learn more about barefoot trimming for Romeo - make him a more solid horse barefoot, and perhaps learn to trim & rasp him down myself. It could happen... If I can learn it on Romeo, maybe Chewie has a shot of growing out those evil front heels & being happy barefoot at least sometime of the year.

I'm off to get some chores done, grocery shopping, and all things necessary to be back at the house alone again... I'm responsible again for every calorie I consume, and every niblit that goes into my body. MacKenzie will certainly be happy to be home, later today. I'm happy to be back by myself, make my own choices, and keep my crazy life moving.

Vacation has taught me... I don't sit still well. That half-done word search puzzle book, two read magazines, and one full read book are evidence.

Cheers, all. It's good to be back.

Politics, Gas Prices

http://republicanleader.house.gov/blog I couldn't help myself - I commented to the Aug 4th afternoon posting.

I'm happy they did it. I really am. I just wish they would've gotten off their rumps, oh, in May or June, when they knew the prices were high, and staged this little protest then. I made one meager contribution to the McCain campaign, and since then, they've spent probably my whole contribution in letters & postage begging for more cash. I have consistently told them, "Initiate or Co-Sponsor an Energy plan, whether it passes or not, and I'll help out more." I also told them, "Lower my fuel price, and I'll send you the overall difference for a month. Until then, quit begging, because I don't have it to give."

So, three cheers to our Conservative Politicians for staying at work, and not going on vacation. It's just too little, too late, because I don't see gas prices dropping severly because they're standing on the floor singing Patriotic hymns.

Bah humbug ... I won't even begin to comment on my local Rep, Ron Paul. He wants to "do what's right"... but won't stand with anybody on any issue. It's almost as if he disagrees just enough to make his vote not count, because he thinks it's funny. That's right, you little nitwit... I enjoy being broke, I really do. I don't see your name on the list of Representatives that stayed at work through the vacation - Must be nice to have a WHOLE MONTH off work. I wouldn't know. I'm too busy working, to pay my gas, to drive to work, to pay my gas, to drive my work, to pay my gas, to drive to work, to

Hoof Update, and Other Remarks

Chewie's hoof is improving. He was a little happier to walk out on it yesterday, so I soaked again, lathered it up again, and bandaged it safely. He's still cooperating taking his meds, which is much appreciated. His lost shoe still hasn't been located in the pasture, so I think I'll saddle Romeo tonight & go searching. Pathetic excuse to ride the pony... Little Man will have a purpose.

In my "other remarks" for the day, I just went on a discussion board I frequent to dispell the use of DMSO for pain relief. Holy geez! This stuff is even cautioned on use for horses, for crying out loud. I pulled out an MSDS for the stuff, where it plainly states "chronic skin use over time has shown central nervous system effects such as dizziness, nausea, etc."

For crying out loud! Why can't we just go to the doctor when we're sick?! Is it really worth the risk to "self medicate", when there are over-the-counter creams and medicines to try? What level of common sense is required to read labels & research thoroughly before pill-popping? I'm all for herbal medicine, and mineral treatments, after they're suggested by a medical professional!! Those folks study hard in school to be qualified to treat us for our ills. I'm taking chromium picolinate & L-glutamine everyday for hypoglycemia, at a GP doctor's recommendation. The same folks that think DMSO is still safe probably want to insulate with asbestos & paint lead-based junk on the school room walls.

Please don't self-medicate, please don't diagnose over the internet. Save the cash & go to a doctor if you don't have insurance. If it feels bad enough to miss work, miss school, or leave you spending hours on the internet trying to guess the diagnosis, go to a doctor!

this little moment brought to you by my chemist little mind. tune in next time for "regular folks self-diagnose and end up in the ER for side-effects"... HMPH

OOOOH... Response to Comments, firing back up...

Thanks, ladies, for the kind remarks to yesterday's blog, along with the one I received externally. I was horribly ticked off when I wrote this, and after I sent a follow-up note to him similar, he responded a bit kinder.

What ticked me was a remark that with his clients there is "no room for mistakes." When I brought that back out as justification for me being upset, I got this long lecture about how difficult my horse's contracted heels, thin walls, and sensitive soles are. There was some other remark like "doing me a favor" by performing the service. Yeah, a "favor"... costs me every month.

He offered to clear my balance as a truce-gesture. I told him, "thank you, it is your decision to do that, and while it's horribly generous, and not necessary, I won't argue". If I have a chiro bill, and any subsequent abscess charges as a result of that bloody nail, the balance I owe should about make us "even", nothing to be said for all the days off work for both of us.

It's worth mentioning that, the last time my horse was quicked this severe, it sat dormant for about a month, a festering abscess. One Saturday afternoon, I found him three-legged lame, swollen, and stagnant, acting like he'd torn a tendon or broke his leg. After an afternoon on the phone, convincing him to limp on the trailer, driving 30mph for an hour and half to the vet, an Equine ER appointment and many heartbreaking tears later, I had a $400 bill and a blown abscess at the coronary band. The stupid thing is finally about grown out. Every time I see the Equilox rasped off, and get a view of the leftover 'hole' growing out, I want to cry all over again. Yes, I was justified in being upset last Friday. It was a miracle I didn't cry or scream on the spot.

Rain bands continue to hammer the area. Work evac'd early yesterday, but I got tied up trying to figure out to do with getting other co-workers out, and left "on time" (for the first time all week). Boss is back in town, and that finally relieves me of the extra responsibility. I can go back to just doing my normal job now. Chewie and Romeo stand in the pasture, patiently grazing and waiting for the storms to pass.
